Youth Steering Committee - Call for Youth

Youth Steering Committee - Call for Youth

The Union of Ontario Indians is accepting applications from youth age 18-25 to join a Youth Steering Committee. There are 2 vacant positions in Northern Superior and 1 in the Southwest region.  The YSC has been meeting for the past year planning the Buzz on Medzins Youth Regional sessions as a follow up to the Buzz on Drugs conference held in Peterborough in 2011.

The intention of the Youth Regional sessions is to address aspects of emotional well-being, reconnection to the land, creating change and making healthy choices.

The spirit of the Regional sessions is to ensure access to resource people such as elders with local medicinal knowledge, traditional knowledge keepers, addictions counselors etc. who are not necessarily living in the community (family ties) but are within reach.

The Youth Regional sessions will include medicine walks, team challenges, bonfire socials, ceremony and mentor-ship opportunities during the 3 day camping weekend.

The dates and location of the sessions are as follows;
Southwest Region Kettle Stony Point June 6-8
Southeast Region Curve Lake July 18-20
Northern Superior Pie  River/Pukaskwa Aug 8-10
Lake Huron Manitoulin Island Sept 12-14

The youth must be a member from Northern Superior, or Southwest Regions and able to travel extensively. They will be required to actively participate in meetings, have excellent creative and leadership skills, and work well with others. Traditional knowledge is a definite asset!

Travel expenses, accommodations, and meals are covered by the UOI in addition to an honorarium.

Deadline for submitting an application is Tuesday April 22nd, 2014.
